The Impact of Ethnicity, Immigration Status, and Socioeconomic Status on Juror Decision Making

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research was to examine how ethnicity, immigration status, and socioeconomic status (SES) may contribute to juror bias. A total of 320 Euro-American venire persons were as- signed to 1 of 8 criminal court trial transcript conditions that varied defendant ethnicity (Mexican or Canadian), immigrant status (undocumented or documented), and SES (low or high). Dependent measures were verdict, sentencing, culpability, and trait attributions. Results indicated that the low-SES undocumented Mexican defendant was found guilty more often, given a more severe sentence, thought to be more culpable, and rated lower on a number of trait measures compared with all other conditions. Subtle bias theories, such as aversive racism, appear to best explain the biases in juror decisions

    A lunar space station

A concept for a space station to be placed in low lunar orbit in support of the eventual establishment of a permanent moon base is proposed. This space station would have several functions: (1) a complete support facility for the maintenance of the permanent moon base and its population; (2) an orbital docking area to facilitate the ferrying of materials and personnel to and from Earth; (3) a zero gravity factory using lunar raw materials to grow superior GaAs crystals for use in semiconductors and mass produce inexpensive fiber glass; and (4) a space garden for the benefit of the air food cycles. The mission scenario, design requirements, and technology needs and developments are included as part of the proposal

Dissociação e transtornos dissociativos: modelos teóricos Dissociation and dissociative disorders: theoretical models

O papel do aprendizado é amplamente discutido, assim como as teorias atuais de neodissociação, trauma e sociocognitivismo para os transtornos dissociativos.<br>It is challenging to understand the dissociative experiences and the origins of dissociative disorders. Contradictions of classification are due to the intrinsic difficulties to build up a theory of the mind that unifies neurobiology and psychodynamics. The authors discuss the conceptual basis of dissociation, with emphasis on the integration of neurobiology and phenomenology. The role of learning is discussed as well as the neodissociative, trauma, and sociocognitive theories for dissociative disorders
